Project Title
Rice Aerial Robotics
Design Challenge
The Rice Aerial Robotics Club is an undergraduate, student-led organization that aims to design and develop an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that confronts the current limits of the industry. This will primarily be done by annually competing in the International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC). The club will also serve to cultivate relationships between students, faculty and companies that share a common passion for aerial robotics.

Information and rules for the International Aerial Robotics Competition can be found here:

Design Summary
The primary purpose of the IARC has been to "move the state-of-the-art in aerial robotics forward" through the creation of significant and useful mission challenges that are "impossible" at the time they are proposed, with the idea that when aerial robotic behaviors called for in the mission are eventually demonstrated, the technology will have been advanced for the benefit of the world.

Mission 7: Challenge teams to demonstrate: "interaction between aerial robots and moving objects (specifically, autonomous ground robots)", navigation in a sterile environment with no external navigation aids such as GPS, and interaction between competing autonomous air vehicles.

It is the job of the UAV to redirect programmable iRobots toward a green boundary of tape of a rectangle on the floor. This can be done by the UAV descending onto the top of a ground robot, causing it to change direction.
