Project Title
Novel Alcohol Ablation Catheter with Electrical Signal Sensing
Design Challenge
Alcohol ablation is an approach that involves inserting a catheter through a vein to locate arrhythmic tissue that produces premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), inflating a balloon to occlude the target area, and injecting alcohol to kill the electrically errant cardiomyocytes. Some of the limitations of this approach include the inadequate distal occlusion of alcohol and procedural complexity. The current method requires 3 separate catheters, making this procedure difficult and time-consuming for physicians. As such, we aim to develop a novel, integrated catheter for alcohol ablation that can effectively occlude, sense, and ablate the area of interest using one singular device.
