Development of Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing Device
Design Challenge
Across industries, metal additive manufacturing has become an increasingly popular method of producing unique parts or replacement components, saving companies enormous amounts of time and money traditionally involved in manufacturing one-off parts. However, current metal additive manufacturing methods melt metal to create the final part, resulting in long build times, diminished mechanical properties, and the exclusion of certain types of metals. Cold spray methods, by contrast, do not require such heat and thus create an incredible opportunity to print a wide range of metallic components with significant improvements to mechanical properties. Our design challenge this semester is to innovate on this rapidly developing technology to contribute to the next generation of additive manufacturing.
