Remotely Operated Vehicle with Buoyancy Control Devices
Design Challenge
Buoyancy Control Devices (BCDs) are soft actuators that help an underwater vehicle (ROV) stay neutrally buoyant. BCDs work using reversible fuel cells to create O2 and H2 gas from water, inflating balloons to change the ROV’s volume. These work in concert with traditional thrusters to create more power-efficient controls, especially for subsea resident ROVs doing inspection, exploration, monitoring or cleanup tasks. When a BCD-based ROV picks up an object, it can stay neutrally buoyant unlike traditional vehicles. We will create a new design for these BCDs along with a demonstration ROV.
