Project Title
Ultrasound-Guided Breast Cancer Biopsy Training Model for Low-Resource Settings
Design Challenge
Much of the disproportionate burden of breast cancer-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is due delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, in part because of a lack of access to diagnostic training for physicians in these settings. Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsies are the primary diagnostic method in LMICs. However, the current training standard, which consists of a raw chicken breast and pimento-stuffed olive biopsy target, has many limitations for LMIC implementation, including anatomical inaccuracy, unpleasant odor, refrigeration requirements, limited reusability, high cost per biopsy, and portability challenges.

Our team's challenge is to develop a realistic, reusable, durable, low-cost breast model for high-fidelity and effective ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy training. This project will increase access to breast cancer diagnostic training for physicians in LMICs and thereby enable earlier and more accurate detection of breast cancer in patients, which has been shown to dramatically improve 5-year survival rates.
