Currently the three locations that are being discussed for Summer 2023 are:

Europe (Paris and Amsterdam)
San Jose, Costa Rica
San Cristobal, Mexico

Go beyond the hedges this summer to take engineering design courses in a foreign location!!

This Study Abroad opportunity will allow you to earn 6 credits in ~4 weeks in June as you immerse yourself into the local culture and interact with students and faculty from local universities and/or nonprofits. 

Please note, that all study abroad options are tentative right now because of COVID-19, so final decisions will not be made until spring 2023.

Program Consists of


  • 4 weeks in the Summer (approximately the month of June)

  • ~40 Hours per week
  • Housing expenses covered - plus some meals (shared apartment or dorm room)
  • Student responsible for tuition, travel and incidental expenses
  • Financial Aid could be possible for some students.  Please check with the financial aid office at Rice.

Location and Courses 

San Jose, Costa Rica

Collaboration with members of Costa Rican universities as well as with Rice's Global Medical Innovation program.

6 credits over 4 weeks

  • ENGI 200 – Engineering Design Studio
  • ENGI 350 – Needs Identification and Design Implementation

Faculty: Matthew Wettergreen and Heather Bisesti

Both courses count as elective courses for the Engineering Design Minor, Entrepreneurship Minor and Global Health Minor

Goal: 8 students

Amsterdam, Netherlands AND Paris, France

6 credits over 4 weeks

  • BUSI 220– Design Thinking
  • ENGI 200 – Engineering Design Studio

Faculty: Hesam Panahi and Matthew Wettergreen

Both courses count as elective courses for the Engineering Design Minor, Entrepreneurship Minor and Global Health Minor

Goal: 8 students

San Cristobal, Mexico

Collaboration with NEWT

6 credits over 4 weeks

  • ENGI 350 – Needs Identification and Design Implementation 
  • CEVE 314 – Sustainable Water Purification for the Developing World

Faculty: Deirdre Hunter and Jorge Loyo

Both courses count as elective courses for the Engineering Design Minor, Entrepreneurship Minor and Global Health Minor

Summary: Students will do in-class instruction on-site at local technical center.  Curriculum will incorporate interaction with students and a local charity working with NEWT,  as well as the Mexican culture.

  • Beginning and Ending Date :  ~May 7th - June 6th
  • Registration Deadline :  March 20, 2023

Cost 

STUDENT PAYS

  • Acceptance/Application fee: $100
  • Tuition for 6 credits: $6,000
  • Airfare: $800 - $2,000 
  • Passport, if needed: $100 - $150
  • Incidentals and Meals: $800 - $1000 - MUST HAVE ACCESS TO FUNDS WHILE ABROAD
  • Approximate TOTAL including tuition: $8,000-$10,000*
  • Student looking for financial aid to help with expenses should reach out to the Financial Aid Office

RICE PAYS

  • HOUSING!! Program pays for housing for the duration of the coursework.
  • Some meals, such as welcome dinner and closing dinner - some housing come with free breakfast
  • Course Activities, Supplies and Field Trips
  • Local Rail pass (if applicable)
  • Sim Cards 
  • Travel Medical Insurance

*depends on travel costs. 


Who Should Apply


Any student that could benefit from the courses listed above.  Those enrolled in the Engineering Design Minor, the Entrepreneurship Minor or the Global Health Minor could obtain 6 credits towards the minor.  Perquisites may be waived where appropriate.
