Developing a Low-Cost Solution for Gastroschisis
Design Challenge
Gastroschisis is a birth defect in which a baby’s intestines are exposed outside of the body through a hole in the abdomen. One current successful treatment in high income countries involves placing the intestines in a silo bag, which protects the intestines and funnels them back into the body through the force of gravity as the baby’s abdomen slowly expands to hold them. Preformed silo bags result in an approximate 99% survival rate. However, almost 0% of newborns with gastroschisis survive in Africa due to a lack of accessibility to manufactured silo bags as a result of their high cost. Our goal is to develop a functional, yet low-cost solution to gastroschisis to help enable greater survival of newborns with this birth defect in tertiary care hospitals in Uganda.
