Helping People Breathe: Bag Valve Mask Ventilation Assist Device (BVAD)
Design Challenge
Every year, over 9.17M neonates in respiratory distress, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and 660,000 patients in the United States are incorrectly ventilated using a bag valve mask (BVM) by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in high income countries and pediatric healthcare workers in LMICs. As BVM users are in highly stressful environments, they tend to overcompensate by over-volumizing and hyperventilating the patient which causes dangerous and potentially lethal consequences such as barotrauma (lung injury) and reduced cardiac output. We seek to develop a device that prevents this by guiding the user using real-time feedback on the ventilation rate and by controlling the volume of air delivered to the patient.
