The Neural Instantiation of Linguistic Information
Design Challenge
Design new forms of analyses or implement unique combinations of existing ones to determine the cortical locations which correspond to specific types of linguistic information in the brain.
Design Summary
A combination of a multi-voxel searchlight, a technique derived from a multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) method in combination with a statistical regimen known as Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA) can be used to locate the distinct regions of the brain that encode for three basic types of linguistic information. This can be used to examine the differences in neural representation between a normal person and an individual with an inability to process a particular kind of linguistic information (e.g. a word's meaning). This has numerous applications, including with stroke patients (identifying possible pathways of neuroplasticity) and studying the cognitive neuroscience of language disorders.
